My Story

June 9th, 2013 was the scariest day of my life, despite the fact that it began as one of the happiest.

My wife had just given birth to our second child, a beautiful baby girl named Harper Grace. We were overjoyed; she was everything that we had dreamed of, and more. The best part, I thought, was that she looked exactly like her mother.

But then… something happened that every parent fears but never really expects.

After we were escorted to the hospital recovery room we had the opportunity to spend a few quiet moments alone as a family. I was holding Harper in my arms, swaddled in her newborn hospital blanket and suckling on a pacifier.

Then she started to turn blue.

Suddenly, everything was moving in slow motion. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. In a matter of seconds our feelings went from proud, elated, and joyful… to absolute terror.

I was watching my newborn daughter suffocate in my arms.

Luckily a nurse happened by just as this was playing out and immediately called down to the NICU. Harper was diagnosed with pulmonary edema. Her lungs were filled with fluid and the oxygen levels in her blood were at life threatening levels.

Harper would spend the next nine days in the NICU, hooked up to tubes and wires, undergoing invasive procedures, fighting for her life. I will never forget the fear and panic of that time – we felt completely helpless. There was nothing we could do but hold her hand and pray.

Thankfully, Harper’s a fighter, and combined with the care of the amazing doctors and nurses in that hospital, she made a full recovery. I had never understood what “thankful” meant until that day.

What I also didn’t understand at the time was the severe impact this would have on our financial lives.

I had a great job, with several insurances through my employer, as well as some assets and savings, so I never gave a single thought about coverage… until we received our bill.

Even though the hospital bills were covered by our medical insurance, in the end, we still incurred out of pocket costs totaling 6 months’ worth of income in just 9 days. It was a big hit for a young family; it meant the depletion of our savings account – one that we had painstakingly grown over the past few years.

Of course, we would have spent every single penny we had if it meant a full healthy recovery for our beautiful baby girl. Her welfare was all that mattered.

But what I now know is that, if properly prepared, we never would have had to.

How do I use this experience to serve others and share my knowledge?

This experience turned out to be a blessing in disguise.  Like a broken pot being used to water the garden, it sparked a desire in me to protect others from all the various risks associated with their financial lives as well as help them generate wealth.  I have been fortunate enough to learn about investments, real estate, and insurance from some of the most gifted minds in the world, and I implement this knowledge holistically in how they fit and work in concert with each other.

My hope is that by allowing us to provide you with the tools and information necessary to be fully optimized, we can help you thrive in good times and bad, and be prepared for the unexpected challenges in life.
